Jane Addams Hull House Association 2008 Annual Report
“Meeting the challenge… creating the change.” The theme of the 2008 Hull House annual report captures the innovative spirit of this organization that continually reinvents itself to meet the needs of underserved communities in metropolitan Chicago.

In 1889, Jane Addams moved to the near west side of Chicago, the first stop for immigrants coming to the nation’s fastest growing city. Ms. Addams’ community center in the old Charles Hull mansion became a center for education, recreation, childcare and social activity. Her work expanded to initiate sweeping reform of city sanitation practice, child labor law, juvenile justice, labor unions, racial injustice and women’s suffrage. She was the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931.
Today, Jane Addams Hull House Association carries on her tradition. The Job Readiness Training course at Hull House’s Employment Program, for example, teaches essentials like skill assessment, appropriate workplace behavior and effective job search techniques. 275 entrepeneurs participated in training and workshops offered by Hull House’s Small Business Development Center, which also helped 15 small business owners receive loans to start up or expand their companies.
I have had the privilege of working with Hull House Association since 1995, designing their annual reports, annual appeal materials, holiday cards and special event materials.
Hull House Association has been at the heart of social service to metropolitan Chicago for 119 years and continues to inspire other agencies around the United States and our world. You can participate in meeting the challenge, creating the change. Visit www.hullhouse.org to find out how you can get involved.
