One Good Word (May 7, 2008)
Loaves and Fishes
This is not
the age of information.
This is not
the age of information.
Forget the news,
and the radio,
and the blurred screen.
This is the time
of loaves
and fishes.
People are hungry,
and one good word is bread
for a thousand.

I fantasize that the history of commerce will one day document this time as the largest shift
in socioeconomic and cultural paradigm since the industrial revolution. This will undoubtedly be known as the “age of information,” where computers, the internet and the technology spawned by it shifted post-industrial life most dramatically. Yet in this age of information,
we have forgotten that much of our technology is like shadow puppets. The gray shadow against the scrim lacks the cherry red nose, painted cheeks and flapping arms of the puppet itself.
There can be no doubt that technology facilitates the conjoining of groups, couples, families, businesses, artists, charlatans, and speculators. But there are reasons we have bodies and it is easy to imagine we are starved for the full-on experience of being alive in front of the glint of the eye, the flush in the face, the strength in the tone of the voice.
We are so lucky; so fortunate to be able to communicate and touch one another through our technology. The shear volume of access we have to information seems infinite. It is also a poignant reminder of the hunger that exists in the midst of a glut of information. The well-chosen word… the comment that emerges out of the silence of wisdom still rules
the day. Those of us who communicate for a living (and who does not, in some way or another?) will still find the treasure resides in the miraculous combination of heart, body,
mind and soul. One good word… and a thousand are fed.
